Maya: Good morning, Honolulu, and welcome to the Honolulu Morning Briefing for Sunday, October fourth, twenty twenty-six. I'm Maya.

Devon: And I'm Devon. It's the kind of Sunday where you grab your coffee, check the surf forecast, and make absolutely no plans before noon. Let's see what the week has in store.

Maya: Starting with the week-ahead weather, and it's a classic trade-wind tug-of-war. Today, Sunday, expect a high near eighty-two and a low around seventy-four, with a seventy-six percent chance of showers. Light drizzle this morning, so if you're heading out early, bring something rainproof.

Devon: Monday dries out a bit, with a high of eighty-two, a low of seventy-three, and rain chances down to thirty-one percent. Tuesday is the warm pick of the week, a high of eighty-four, a low of seventy, just a twenty-seven percent chance of rain, and light winds at seven miles per hour.

Maya: Midweek the wet side returns. Wednesday brings light rain showers with a forty-nine percent chance, a high of eighty-two and a low of seventy-two. Thursday is the one to watch: temperatures dip to seventy-eight for the high and seventy-one for the low, with a sixty percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. So make Thursday your indoor day if you can.

Devon: Friday warms back to eighty-four with drizzle and a fifty-one percent chance of rain, and Saturday looks the best of the bunch: eighty-two, seventy-three, just a twenty-six percent chance of rain, and breezes picking up to thirteen miles per hour. The UV index stays high all week, around eight, so keep the sunscreen handy even on the cloudy days.

Maya: Now for coastal conditions. Wave heights are running about four feet today, steady through midweek, with water temperatures near eighty-one degrees. Gentle, warm, and very swim-friendly — a lovely few days for the south shore. That said, with those rain chances climbing midweek, check conditions before paddling out.

Devon: Tonight's night skies, then. Sunset is at six sixteen this evening, and astronomical darkness arrives just before seven thirty. The moon is a waning crescent, only thirty-four percent lit, and it doesn't rise until about quarter to two in the morning. So the early evening is moonless — perfect dark skies for stargazing.

Maya: And there's a real prize up there: Saturn is shining in the southeast after dark, high overhead at fifty-one degrees. Even a small telescope will show its rings. Plus, keep an eye on the southwest at six fifty-four this evening, when the International Space Station makes a visible pass at seventeen degrees above the horizon. A great evening to just lie back on the sand and look up.

Devon: On to arts and entertainment, and it's a fun weekend. The headline act is Cirque du Soleil's O-ow-ah-nah, the resident show at the Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel. It's a love letter to Hawaiian culture and circus artistry, and it's topping the weekend's event listings.

Maya: Families, take note: the Honolulu Theatre for Youth has Anime Momotaro playing today at two in the afternoon in the Capitol District — a fresh spin on a classic Japanese folk tale for young audiences, tickets from fifteen dollars. And on Saturday morning, the same theatre had its MOVE dance show at half past ten.

Devon: For a free evening option, Jazz Vespers is listed for this Sunday at five thirty at the Central Union Church in Kapiolani. Free jazz in a beautiful church as the weekend winds down — hard to beat that.

Maya: Now the news. First up, a story with real local stakes for travelers: Alaska Air Group, the parent of Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines, has unveiled its biggest premium travel overhaul yet. Two new flagship cabin brands: Aurora for Alaska, and Lay-ho-koo for Hawaiian — that's lei of stars, named for Polynesian navigation — anchored by lie-flat suites on the big jets.

Devon: The details matter if you fly a lot. There's also a brand-new premium economy cabin called Premium Reserve, and on the ground, a thirteen-thousand-square-foot Hawaiian lounge in Honolulu set for early twenty twenty-eight. The premium seats go on sale next summer and start flying in twenty twenty-eight. Hawaii is a big part of the pitch: Honolulu is being positioned as a major gateway in the group's wider strategy.

Maya: Second story: the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is perfect. The Wahine swept Grand Canyon University for the second night in a row on Saturday, staying undefeated in the first two weeks of Mountain West play. The Bows keep rolling — what a start to conference season.

Devon: Third story, and a reminder to respect the mountains: three hikers were rescued Saturday morning after becoming stranded above the Stairway to Heaven trail. The Honolulu Fire Department got the call around nine oh nine in the morning and responded with six units and eighteen personnel. Everyone was brought out safely, but it closes the loop on the weekend's warning — those trails are no joke.

Maya: A quick heads-up for downtown drivers this week: Hawaiian Electric begins upgrading an underground manhole along Queen Street starting Friday, October tenth, with night work running through early January. Expect lane closures weeknights between seven thirty in the evening and four thirty in the morning, and plan alternate routes.

Devon: That's the briefing for Sunday, October fourth. A showery start, a gorgeous Saturday ahead, Saturn in the southeast tonight, Cirque du Soleil on the strip, and perfect volleyball at the Stan Sheriff. Honolulu, enjoy the week.

Maya: Mahalo for listening. We'll be back tomorrow morning with your next Honolulu Morning Briefing. Aloha.
